چکیده

Would you go to the dentist more often if it were free? Observational data is here used to analyze the impact of full-coverage insurance on dental care utilization using di¤erent identi…cation strategies. The challenge of assessing the bite of moral hazard without an experimental study design is to separate it from adverse selection, as agents act on private and generally unobservable information. By utilizing a quasi-experimental feature of the insurance scheme the moral hazard e¤ect is identi…ed on observables, and by having access to an instrument the e¤ect is identi…ed with IV. Moral hazard is assessed using both di¤erence-in-di¤erences and cross-sectional estimations. Keywords: Asymmetric information, Moral Hazard, Health Insurance, Porpensity Score Matching, IV. JEL codes: D82, G22, I11. This paper has bene…ted from comments by Magnus Johannesson, Michael Lechner, Douglas Lundin, Mark Pauly, Alexander Spearmann, and seminar participants at Stockholm School of Economics, Stockholm University, Uppsala University, 2nd Conference on Evaluation Research in Mannheim 2004, 26th Nordic Health Economics Study Group Meeting, and EEA congress 2006. Per Johansson, Je¤rey Smith and Niklas Zethraeus have made suggestions on the estimations. I am grateful to the National Dental Service in Värmland, Sweden, especially to Jörgen Paulander, for providing data and odontological expertise, and to Ann-Britt Emilsson for generously answering questions on registration practices. All remaining cavities in the analysis are mine. Financial support from Finanspolitiska Forskningsinstitutet is gratefully acknowledged. The Social Amplification of Risk and the Hazard Sequence: The October 1995 Oral Contraceptive Pill Scare

Hazard notifications routinely occur as part of the identification or management of a hazard. It is argued that a series of such notifications a hazard sequence may affect public responses to future notifications about that hazard and also that hazard sequences can help explain patterns of risk amplification, particularly how a risk becomes normalised. Exploration of the hazard sequence also me...

Dietary acrylamide intake and the risk of head-neck and thyroid cancers: results from the Netherlands Cohort Study.

Acrylamide exposure has been related to an increased incidence of oral and thyroid tumors in animal studies. In 1986, 120,852 persons (aged 55-69 years) were included in the Netherlands Cohort Study. Dietary acrylamide intake was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire and was based on chemical analysis of all relevant Dutch foods. Hazard ratios were adjusted for smoking and other confound...

The Use of Monte-Carlo Simulations in Seismic Hazard Analysis in Tehran and Surrounding Areas

Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is a technique for estimating the annual rate of exceedance of a specified ground motion at a site due to the known and suspected earthquake sources. A Monte-Carlo approach is utilized to estimate the seismic hazard at a site. This method uses numerous resampling of an earthquake catalog to construct synthetic catalogs to evaluate the ground motion hazard a...

GIS analysis for vulnerability assessment of drought in Khuzestan province in Iran using standardized precipitation index (SPI)

The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is a widely used drought index to provide good estimations of the intensity, magnitude and spatial extent of droughts. The objective of this study was to analyze the spatial pattern of drought by SPI index. In this paper, patterns of drought hazard in Khuzestan are evaluated according to the data of 17 weather stations during data recording. The influe...
